How to Submit a Skillshare Class Project Privately

You can submit a Skillshare class project privately by opening Projects & Resources, selecting Submit Project, and unchecking Share your work with creatives like you before publishing. A privately published project is hidden from the public class gallery, but Skillshare says it can still count toward the project requirement for a certificate. A saved draft does not count.

This guide explains the difference between private and draft status, the complete submission process, how to revise your work, and how to protect personal information when sharing a class exercise.

Private, public, and draft are not interchangeable

Skillshare's official project instructions distinguish three states. The distinction matters if you are trying to earn a class certificate without displaying unfinished work in a public gallery.

Project state Visible in public gallery Eligible for project requirement
Saved draft No No
Published privately No Yes
Published publicly Yes Yes

A private project is useful when your assignment contains a rough sketch, a personal photograph, or an early design that you are not ready to share broadly. A public project makes more sense when you want fellow learners to see your process and potentially offer feedback.

Private does not mean you should upload confidential documents. The platform still stores your submission. Remove passwords, private addresses, client data, and any materials you do not have permission to upload. If you need feedback on sensitive work, consider creating an anonymized version instead.

Publish a project privately, step by step

  1. Open the class in a browser. Sign in to Skillshare, open the class, and read the teacher's project prompt.
  2. Go to Projects & Resources. Choose Submit Project to open the editor.
  3. Add a project title and description. Explain what you made, what you learned, and what you would change next.
  4. Add supporting material if appropriate. You can add a cover image, inline images, and supported external video links. Check that you own or can share everything you upload.
  5. Uncheck the public sharing option. The setting is labeled Share your work with creatives like you in Skillshare's instructions.
  6. Select Publish. Do not stop at Save Draft if you need the project to count toward a certificate. Return to your profile to confirm that the published project is private.

Skillshare recommends a cover image of 690 by 388 pixels and specifies an 8 MB maximum for project images. These limits can change, so check the current help article if an upload is rejected. Resize a copy of the image rather than overwriting your original working file.

What to include in a useful submission

A strong project explains decisions, not just the finished artifact. A lettering student might show an initial composition and the final spacing adjustment. A photographer might explain why a particular light source was chosen. A web designer might show a wireframe and describe the problem it solves.

Use a simple four-part structure: goal, process, result, next improvement. A sentence or two for each part gives the teacher enough context to understand your choices. If you used the teacher's template, credit it rather than presenting it as wholly original.

Keep a clean copy of your project files on your own device. A local folder for sketches, exported images, and notes makes revisions easier and prevents you from relying on a social project page as your only backup. Name versions clearly and keep your original editable files separate from smaller web-ready images.

If you need a worksheet or class resource, look in the teacher's official class materials. Our Skillshare class download guide covers lesson video workflows, not the permission to repost teacher-provided templates or reference files.

Edit your project without creating a duplicate

Skillshare generally allows one project per class. To revise an existing submission, open the project from the bottom of your profile page, choose Edit Project, make the changes, and select Publish to save them. This also works for projects you originally saved as drafts.

If you complete several exercises from one class, combine them into the same project with short headings such as First attempt, Revision, and Final result. For a challenge class, follow the teacher's instructions for updating that single project over time.

According to Skillshare, teachers are not notified when you edit a project. If you want feedback on a new version, use the class discussion or another channel the teacher explicitly provides. Do not assume that pressing Publish sends a new alert.

Keep your own revision notes. Record what you changed and why. For example, note that you shortened an animation, adjusted contrast, or rewrote a paragraph after peer feedback. This turns the project into evidence of learning rather than a one-time upload.

If the project editor or Publish button is missing

First confirm that you are on the class's Projects & Resources page rather than the main course listing. The editor is tied to a particular class. Try a desktop browser if the interface is hard to use on a small screen.

Skillshare's app support article says direct project publishing from the app is not supported. On iOS, selecting Submit Project can redirect to the mobile website. Use a browser if the app does not provide the editor.

If an image upload fails, check its dimensions and file size. Export a smaller JPEG or PNG copy, confirm the file opens locally, and try one image at a time. Do not use an unauthorized third-party uploader that asks for your Skillshare password.

If you cannot find the project in the public gallery, check whether you deliberately selected private visibility. If it remains a draft, return to the editor and select Publish. A private project being absent from the public gallery is expected behavior, not evidence of a failed submission.

For problems playing lessons rather than submitting work, see Skillshare offline viewing on a laptop. These are separate functions, and a video downloader does not submit class projects for you.

Skillshare's Achievements guidance says that completing lessons and publishing a project are relevant to class certificates. Both private and public published projects can qualify for the project portion, but a draft cannot. A published project alone does not guarantee that all lesson completion requirements are satisfied.

Review your project for hidden personal details before publishing. Photographs can contain location metadata, screenshots can expose account names, and shared documents can reveal editing histories. Use an exported copy and remove unnecessary identifiers. If you include client or employer work, obtain permission first.

Skillshare Downloader is a Chrome extension intended for supported videos your account can already view. If you have authorization to save a lesson, install it from its official Chrome Web Store listing and check the creator's terms before use. It cannot submit projects, change their visibility, bypass protected classes, or give you permission to redistribute copyrighted lessons.

The short version

To keep a Skillshare class project out of the public gallery, uncheck the sharing option and publish privately. A draft is not enough for the project requirement of a certificate. Revise the same project when needed, protect sensitive information, and verify the published status from your profile.
